NEW! Executive Summary of the EST_IT@2018 report!

This year one of the foresight projects the Development Fund deals with is how to use ICT in the future, EST_IT@2018. We Introduce and discuss the results of this foresight at the conference, including possibilities which arose during the Estonian ICT foresight expert inquiry in the most important applied areas such as: education, medicine, manufacturing, energy, financial services and ICT security.

Within the frame of EST_IT@2018:

  •            Knowledge of ICT global trends and development for Estonia,
  •            Discuss our strengths and weaknesses of using ICT in the global context and 
  •            contribution to creating an Estonian IT vision.

The EST_IT@2018 conference takes place on 11 December from 10am to 6pm at the Swissôtel Tallinna conference centre.  

CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION IS BY INVITATION ONLY. If you are interested please contact birgit[a]carrot.ee or tel. 6177336. The conference summary, material and videocasts will be issued afterwards on the Development Fund’s website. 

The participants are greeted by the Estonian Development Fund Chairman of the Supervisory Board Mr Indrek Neivelt. The opening words to the conference are given by Mr Mart Laar who during his leadership as Prime Minister started the e-government. In addition to Estonian Development Fund representatives, the parallel sessions by opinion leaders in certain areas and discussion panels, the main presentation at the conference is given by:

 Hamish McRae

Hamish McRae, is the principal economic commentator of “The Independent” and “The Independent on Sunday”. He was named Business and Finance Journalist of the Year 2006 at the British Press Awards. Awards include Financial Journalist of the Year in 1979, a special merit award in the first Amex Bank essay awards in 1987, 1996 Columnist of the Year in the Periodical Publisher's Awards – and in 2005 the David Watt Prize for outstanding political journalism. He is a visiting professor at the School of Management at Lancaster University and a council member of the Royal Economic Society.

Hamish McRae
is also the author of the acclaimed work on the future "The World in 2020: Power, Culture and Prosperity" first published in 1994 and translated into more than a dozen languages, including Japanese, Korean and Chinese. His other books include "Capital City - London as a Financial Centre", co-authored with Frances Cairncross, and "Wake-up Japan", co-authored with Tadashi Nakamae. His current areas of work include the shift of power to the economies of Asia and the impact of the new technologies on the world economy. He is now working on a new book on global best practice.

Hamish McRae was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh and took an honours degree in Economics and Political Science at Trinity College, Dublin. He was deputy editor of "The Banker" and editor of "Euromoney" before becoming financial editor of "The Guardian" in 1975. In 1989 he moved to "The Independent" where he is now associate editor.

  • Ene Tammeoru, Head of Estonian e-Learning Development Centre.


In health care:

  • Madis Tiik, Member of the Management Board, Estonian eHealth Foundation, and
  • Kristjan Port, Director, Institute of Health Sciences and Sports, Tallinn University.


In manufacturing:

  • Jüri Riives, Chairman of the Board, Federation of Estonian Engineering Industry, and
  • Kalle Kuusik, Chairman of the Board, Enics Eesti.


In energy:

  • Tarmo Mere, Eesti Energia, Distribution network Director and
  • Jaan Järvik, Tallinn University of Technology, Professor of Power Engineering.

In financial services:

  • Andrus Alber, Chairman of the Management Board, NASDAQ OMX Tallinn Stock Exchange and
  • Tõnu Grünberg, EMT Executive Vice President in charge of Development and Technology.


In ICT security:

  • Ülo Jaaksoo, Chairman of the Board, Cybernetica AS and
  • Margus Vaino, Member of the Board, Santa Monica Networks AS.
