Globalisation increases competition between companies. The functions of globally operating companies are distributed around the world, according to where there is an approriate cost structure, knowledge, skills and business environment for their operations. Work moves to where the best conditions are there to do it. This, in turn, exacerbates competition between locations and for getting the brains. Each country or region's dream is to attract or retain these functions in its country which are bigger value-added and knowledge-based. The intense competition on the knowledge market presents new challenges for national higher education systems. At the same time, it is projected that the annual growth of international students globally in the next 10 years will be 6% (Vision 2020: Global student mobility, BC 2004). The biggest growth is forecast in Asia and Africa, the European annual increase is 2% according to the study. Higher education related questions in light of Estonian economic development, broadly speaking, fall into two categories: |
All of this requires the universities to innovate. The small is seen only with a magnifying glass and the meagre doesn't attract but fightens away also local talented people. To remain competitive, it is necessary to acquire in the research study a certain quantity and quality. For Estonia this means first of all finding the fields in which specialising will achieve world excellence and international visibility. A good example is the Finnish created Aalto University. The new, bold and attractive proposition creates an entirely new university through merging three recent dignified universities, where business competences, technology and design are crossing.
