Logistics
|
The term logistics comes from the Greek word logistikos and meant the ability to do arithmetic equations. A close word means intelligence, common sense and word. The French word loger which has come from latin, means accommodating soldiers and the noun logis place of accommodation. The contemporary definition of logistics is closely related to the supply chain approach. The Global Supply Chain Forum, which consists of business and academic institutions, and which aim is to modernise the approach of logistics. The above-mentioned institution has defined logistics as follows:
Tens of millions of tons of transit goods is transported through Estonia, and has already been successfully carried out for more than 700 years, if not longer. On 15 May 1248 the Danish King Erik IV granted Lübeck law to Tallinn, with which Tallinn joined the common judicial area of medieval German trade cities. This date is considered the start of large-scale and organized transit through Estonia. The Port of Tallinn has been in second place for many years in the list of Baltic Sea ports after St. Petersburg. |
After the Primorska petroleum port was constructed in the coast of the NE Gulf of Finland, the Port of Tallinn moved to third place. In 2008, unfortunately, Tallinn was passed by the port of Klaipeda and Riga. In 9 months the Port of Tallinn handled 21,872 million tonnes of goods, the port of Riga 21,946 million tonnes and Klaipeda 23,145 million tonnes. The volume of trade in the second Latvian port, Ventspils, is now at its heels - 21, 314 million tonnes (MKM, 2008). The Estonian transport infrastructure and transportation companies are able to cover far more than only their own country's transport demands. In the transit turnover, the share of international freight transport reaches 79.9%, including 71.6% of road transport and even 93.7% in public transport by rail (in the first half of 2008). Before the reduction in transit these figures were even significantly higher. In developing the transit cluster Estonia has implemented modern logistics principles: to make the transit easy and comfortable as possible, to provide modern logistics solutions to its partners and high quality and to be a reliable partner. One should also not underestimate the relatively entrepreneurship friendly Estonian economic environment and, of course, our entrepreneurs' experience to communicate with both the East and West. Everything done so far has also been reasonable, because many generations in Estonia and elsewhere have realised - transit is a useful activity for a country, it will ensure that people are employed, tax revenue and reputation of the state. Moreover, transit is one of the economic sectors, which purely represents the export of services. For Estonia, which consistently wrestles with a negative trade balance, this is probably the most important argument in favour of transit. See also: |
