The Estonian Development Fund organised a Futures Forum today which introduced one of the most thorough reports analysing the Estonian economy's recent situation and potential: "The Estonian Economy Current Status of Competitiveness and Future Outlooks". In order to better understand the competitive position of the Estonian economy in the bounderless world of the 21st century and in our future outlooks, the Estonian Development Fund commissioned the aforementioned study from the University of Tartu . The goal of the study was not merely mapping the current competitive positions of Estonian enterprises, but also an analysis of possible future scenarios and recommendations for avoiding the undesirable developments. It is important to understand, that our challenges are not short term, i.e. what will happen to our economy in 2008 and how it is slowing down, but in the fact that our current economic structure does not allow us to reach the wealthiest states in the 21st century. The growth rate of the Estonian economy has been one of the fastest in Europe, but its sustainability according to economists is directly dependent on our state’s ability to significantly change the economic structure fast. What are the future outlooks for the Estonian economy? What are our options and their consequences – these were the talking points at Futures Forum. The results of the University of Tartu’s study were introduced by the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Urmas Varblane, and in the discussion panel there were Indrek Neivelt, Erik Terk, Ott Pärna, Linnar Viik and Sten Tamkivi. The host of the conference was Jari Kukkonen. |
The conference took place at Sokos Hotell Viru restoran Merineitsi, Viru väljak 4, Tallinn, Estonia.
